Mask Mandate Update (Stay Granted) January 25, 2022

Dear Mt. Pleasant Community,

It has been a very busy day and I am writing to you to provide an update on the mask mandate situation.

Schools across New York State were informed that a temporary stay was issued pending a hearing and determination on the merits of the case.  That hearing is scheduled for Friday, January, 28, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. and a decision could be rendered either that day or shortly thereafter regarding the extent to which the mask mandate in New York will continue beyond Friday. I have read the decision and have confirmed with counsel that, for now, this means that masks will once again be mandated for all schools in New York State until the Appellate Division renders its determination.  As was the case last night, we will follow the court orders and directives that are provided to us. I understand that there will be a wide range of reactions to this news. It is truly unfortunate that our schools have been put in this position as these constant changes are disruptive to our core mission of teaching and learning. I too am ready for more consistency on the issue of masking and other Covid related matters. We have come a long way and I remain committed to work together towards the best outcomes for the children we share. It is very frustrating for everyone. I encourage you to visit the Advocacy Page of our website if you wish to advocate directly on this issue.

As always, I will keep you updated as the situation changes.

Very truly yours,

Dr. Peter Giarrizzo

Superintendent of Schools
